Vaasa is the regional centre of Ostrobothnia. The city is located in a scenic location on the shores of the Gulf of Bothnia. Vaasa is only 80 km from Umeå in Sweden. The journey between the two cities takes about four hours by boat. Vaasa is a historically interesting city. The city was founded in 1606 by King Kaarle IX. Old Vaasa is located about 10 kilometers from the city center. The area of Old Vaasa was the centre of the city until 1852, when Vaasa burned down. The Kvarken Archipelago is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is worth visiting when visiting Vaasa. Nature in the archipelago is constantly changing due to land uplift.
