The Amethyst mine in Lampivaara is one of the few gemstone mines in the world where visitors are welcome. Lampivaara's amethyst was born 2,000 million years ago, in the hollows of the great mountain range of that time. Now operating at the top of the fell, the operation of the mine will continue for hundreds of years, because amethyst is not mined with large machines and the stone is not sold as raw material. This enables tours for visitors, who get to look for their own amethyst in the mine with them. In the mining program, visitors will hear about the geology and history of the area, as well as the properties, uses and beliefs of gemstones, which are especially associated with amethyst. We guarantee that every visitor will find their own amethyst stone! The entrance fee includes one stone that can fit in the finder's closed fist. Larger and extra stones can be bought with you for an additional price. At the end of the visit, there is still time to stop by the mine's small stone shop, where amethyst stones and charming amethyst jewelry made in Lapland are sold. Search amethyst in the wonderful fell landscapes A visit to the amethyst mine in winter includes transportation on the Ametisti-Pendolino (either from the center of Luosto, from Ukko-Luosto or from Lampivaara's cafe) up to the top of Lampivaara. From the top of the hill, there are great views of the Pyhä-Luosto National Park. The amethyst mine is an open pit on top of a fell. Part of the excavation area is covered, which enables the search for amethysts even if there is a couple of meters of snow outside on the slope of the fell.
