Porvoo is known for its colourful and atmospheric old town, which is one of the most photographed places in Finland and a favourite among tourists. Old Porvoo is special because of its hilliness, as other old wooden house towns in Finland are located on flat ground. Porvoo is easy to walk through, as the distances are short. Finland's national poet J. L. Runeberg lived in Porvoo for a long time, and his former home can still be visited. The painter Albert Edelfelt also spent 26 summers in Porvoo, during which he painted more than 220 paintings. The studio, built by him in 1883, is open to visitors. In the studio you can see drawings, photographs and objects that belonged to the artist. Although Porvoo is very beautiful in summer, it is also worth visiting in winter. Visiting the Christmas markets and markets offers a nice Christmas spirit. The city hosts an annual light festival in February, during which various lights and soundscapes are placed in the city centre for two days. Porvoo has many cute cafés, small boutiques and restaurants serving delicious food. Although the city is visited by many tourists, Old Porvoo has also remained an area inhabited by locals. Kokonniemi is a ski resort located only two kilometers from the city center. Kokonniemi has five slopes, the highest of which is 55 meters.
