Kajaani is the regional centre of Kainuu, located on the east side of Lake Oulujärvi along the Kajaaninjoki River. Lake Oulujärvi is the fifth largest lake in Finland. Only 30 km from Kajaani you can visit Kainuu's most popular travel destination, Vuokatti Resort. In Kajaani, it is worth visiting Ärjänsaari, which is a very beautiful island of Lake Oulujärvi. There are long sandy beaches on the island and a 10 km long path around the island. The path is easy to walk and signposted, so there is no risk of getting lost. Natural attractions on Ärjänsaari include dunes and fly sand areas. The birthplace of the well-known Finnish writer Eino Leino is located in Kajaani. Even today, in Paltaniemi in Kajaani, you can visit the Eino Leino Memorial House on the shore of Lake Paltajärvi. The house features a photographic exhibition of the lives of both Eino Leino and Elias Lönnrot. Kajaani has a unique attraction which is the world's only operating tar canal. For a long time, tar was one of Finland's most important export products, and a tar canal was built in 1847 to facilitate its transportation. Every year in July, a tar rowing show will be held at the Tar Canal, during which the locks of the canal will be opened and tar boats will row through the dams to the accompaniment of accordion music. Kajaani Castle ruins was built in the 1600s and its task was to control the waterway between Ostrobothnia and Russia-Karelia. It is a cultural attraction protected by the Antiquities Act. The castle was built by order of King Kaarle IX along the Kajaaninjoki River. The site was last restored more extensively in 2001-2008. About 20 kilometres from the centre of Kajaani, you can stay in an igloo either on the shore of Lake Oulujärvi or on the ice of the lake during the winter season. From the igloo it is possible to spot the Northern Lights. Book a trip What do you think about Onnibus? Give us Feedback Freshest news and travel tips What's New
