Sights in Helsinki – Korkeasaari Zoo and Market Square Helsinki is a nice and compact town, where moving around is really effortless. The following tips are equally suitable for all visitors regardless of age. Korkeasaari Zoo The Korkeasaari Zoo is located outside of Helsinki. The easiest way to get to the Zoo is to take the bus number 16 from the Railway Square, Rautatientori. The bus ride will take about 25 minutes and the bus will take you to the ticket office of the Zoo, right in front of the entrance of Korkeasaari. The Korkeasaari Zoo is a good choice for families with children. There is a lot to see in the Zoo, 150 animals and 1000 plant species, presenting the versatility of the nature. Most of the animals can been seen throughout the year and the best time to make a visit is during the feeding time. In Korkeasaari Zoo, there are three restaurants and inside picnic spaces. Helsinki Market Square and Old Market Hall Helsinki Market Square is located in the southern Port of Helsinki, at the other end of Esplanadi Park. Around Market Square you can find Helsinki Old Market Hall, the Presidential Palace, Helsinki City Hall and the sea swimming pool Allas Sea Pool. The Market Square is active year-round and on a cold day you can enjoy a hot drink in the heated tent café. In addition to the traditional market place, Helsinki Market Square is a central place for different events. The World Ice Hockey Championship victories were celebrated on the Market Square with tens of thousands of people. Silakkamarkkinat, the Helsinki Baltic Herring Market, is one of Finland’s oldest traditional events, dating back to year 1743. This annual event takes place in October. The market has a large selection of fish products: smoked fish, marinated products, fresh fish and other islander products. The red-brick Old Market Hall was built in 1889 and is situated in Eteläranta, beside Helsinki Market Square. There are over 20 merchants who will make sure you won’t leave the site hungry. The assortment includes fish, meat, vegetables, pastries and many other products. The range of restaurants varies from Asian to Scandinavian kitchen. The Old Market Hall is open from Monday to Saturday 9–18.
