Jean Sibelius is the most internationally renowned Finnish composer. In honour of his birthday, 8 December is a flag day in Finland. Sibelius was born in 1865 in Hämeenlinna and lived his childhood and youth there. After graduating from high school, Sibelius moved to Helsinki to study law, but dropped out after only a year because he was more interested in music. He studied music in Helsinki for some years, after which he left to continue his studies in Berlin and Vienna. Among Finns, Sibelius's best-known work is the Finlandia anthem, which he composed in 1899 and 1900 for orchestra. Later, Sibelius also arranged the work separately for choir. In 1904, Sibelius moved to Järvenpää with his wife and lived there until his death. Book a trip What do you think about Onnibus? Give us Feedback Freshest news and travel tips What's New
