Tampere - Jämsä
Cheap and environmentally friendly choice for travel
Adrenaline-driven Jämsä
- The town, formerly known mainly for its ski resort, has become a year-round travel destination.
- There are many ways to experience the thrill of speed with or without engines.
- In contrast to adrenaline rushes, the area also has excellent natural sites.
Looking for some speed and excitement? Then mark this next stop on our holiday in Finland with a bright red marker. Jämsä, known for Himos Ski Resort, offers adrenaline rushes with various recipes, but there are also opportunities for calming down in nature. But first and foremost, we start at the slopes of Himos, the heart of Jämsä tourism.
The Himos Ski Resort opened to public in the mid-80s. Today, Himos has more than 20 slopes right from the beginner's mounds to slopes better suited to an experienced alpine skier. The sense of high-speed action is guaranteed, no matter what your skill level may be! Anyone familiar with the ski resort etiquette knows the proper way to call it a day – after ski. Just make your way to the Alpine-style Restaurant Rinne at the foot of Western Himos to enjoy food and beverages after a long day at the slopes.
One of Jämsä's other popular winter activities is dog sledding organized by Kievarin Rantapirtti and McAhon Safarit. Like alpine skiing, this is a real family activity. That is, if the little ones in the family have the courage to hop on a brisk husky ride.
A HOLIDAY TRIP FULL OF PACE
The thrill of speed is also available with the help of technology onboard different motor vehicles. In the Himos-Jämsä area you can go for a ride on a snowmobile or ATV either independently or as part of a group. Check out Himos Safarit to rent a snowmobile and get some maps to explore the area's extensive snowmobile trails.
In the summer you can get an even more fierce ride in Jämsä. Central Finland is known as the rally region of the country, which is befitting for our next adventure. A company called Simulaattorimaailma organizes real rally car experiences where guests can take the codriver’s seat blasting through gravel roads of Jämsä. It may seem like a bumpy ride, but you will get to the finish line in one piece under the guidance of a professional driver.
As its name suggests, Simulaattorimaailma (simulator world) also has racing simulators, console games and entertainment games for virtual fun. Especially when travelling with a group of friends, this is an absolute stop in Jämsä for some playful competition. Bragging rights are up for the best rally driver!
NATURE TRIP IN JÄMSÄ
After a wild ride on a vehicle of your choice, you may long for a slightly calmer finish to your Jämsä holiday. At this point, one of Jämsä's many natural sites are just the perfect choice. Isojärvi National Park is best suited to a trip of at least one day, as the area has a total of about 30 kilometres of hiking trails. Going on a trip with light equipment is just fine, as there is a café (Heretyn kahvila) that rents equipment from tents to camping stoves.
Interested in just a short hike? The popular Pukinvuori outdoor trail near the city center is convenient for a short trip outdoors. The area is known for its diverse vegetation and one of the best views of Jämsä’s city center. Just make your way to the lean-to along the trails and take a break admiring the stunning scenery.
As our blog suggests, Jämsä has something to offer for families, speedsters, and nature travelers alike.
