Things to Do and See in Tampere
MUSEUM CENTER VAPRIIKKI The best museum in Finland is actually a museum center. The Vapriikki Museum Center in Tampere houses the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame, which is open year-round. Instead of just staring at information plaques and collectibles, you can grab a stick and bring out your inner Patrik Laine with a shooting simulator.
Other permanent exhibitions can be found at the Natural History Museum and the Finnish Museum of Games, showcasing the history of digital and board games. Other exhibitions vary seasonally. Vapriikki's strength is its versatility, which means there's something for the whole family to enjoy.
PYYNIKKI OBSERVATION TOWER
Can you smell freshly baked doughnuts? You sure can! The Pyynikki Observation Tower in Tampere is famous not only for its stunning ridge landscapes but also for the delicious doughnuts made at the café at the base of the tower. The tower itself is only 26 meters high, but because it's located on a ridge, the height above sea level is a whopping 150 meters.
You can treat yourself to a doughnut at the café with a clear conscience because the calories can be worked off by climbing up to the tower. The climb to the tower involves the famous 'Tahdon' stairs, made popular in the 1980s by the summer training sessions of Tampere's ice hockey players. So, just like Rauno Korpi used to say, grab a friend, throw them on your back, and start climbing!
NÄSINNEULA
The most iconic landmark in Tampere. Näsinneula is Finland's tallest building: from the top of the needle-like steel mast to the ground, it's a whopping 168 meters! The design of Näsinneula was inspired by the Puijo Tower and Seattle's Space Needle. The observation deck is located at a height of 120 meters, a few meters below Näsinneula's restaurant. For families with children and those looking for fun, Näsinneula is an obvious destination, as the tower is located in the heart of Särkänniemi Amusement Park.
