Welcome to our new blog post format! Our holiday in Finland continues with some top charts and various topics related to travelling. First up, we delve into the heart of performing arts by taking a look at the most interesting theatres Finland has to offer. 5. TTT-Theatre Tampere is one of the most important culture cities in Finland, as you may already know after reading our post about Tampere. (LINK TO TAMPERE BLOG POST) It is only fitting that Tampere has several theatres to choose from. Our pick is TTT-Theatre (Tampereen Työväen Teatteri) that had its first shows over a hundred years ago. With four stages to cover the programme, there is always something for everyone, and the location is conveniently just 1.5 km from the bus station. TTT-Theatre is not afraid to take on ambitious and challenging projects, as their latest musical spectacle Hamlet demonstrates. 4. Cirko – Center for New Circus Some may forget that circus also falls under theatre, but we will make no such mistake. The first Helsinki theatre on our list combines traditional and contemporary circus with both Finnish and international performers. The 1,400-square-metre circus house in Suvilahti serves as a training and performance venue for about 100 circus artists every year. At the time of writing, Cirko is undergoing a show break due to the prevailing circumstances, but the operation will continue again in January 2021. Previous shows include John-Paul Zaccarini’s The Mixrace Mixtape, which combined some circus elements with rapping and spoken word poetry. 3. Åbo Svenska Teater From the capital we move to the cradle of Finnish theatre, Turku, in Southwestern Finland. Åbo Svenska Teater is the oldest theatre in Finland and it operates in an impressive building right in the city center of Turku. The theatre house was inaugurated as early as 1839. As its name suggests, it is a Swedish-speaking theatre, but musicals and operas are subtitled in Finnish and Swedish. ÅST is worth considering even if both languages remain an unsolved mystery to you. The classic and dignified setting is definitely one of the most prestigious in Finland. ÅST is known as an ambitious theatre willing to create new interpretations on classics such as Finland’s national epic Kalevala. Regular actors include names such as Daniela Franzell and Monica Nyman. 2. Helsinki City Theatre Any Finnish theatre listing would not be complete without the Helsinki City Theatre, the largest professional theatre in the country. Helsinki City Theatre has five stages where a wide range of shows are available for theatre-lovers. The repertoire includes musical theatre, comedies, speech plays and children's performances. Several of the top Finnish names in the field are seen on the stage, such as Eija Vilpas, Pekka Huotari and Santeri Kinnunen. 1. Linnateatteri Linnateatteri is the second Turku theatre and the top name on our list. The comedy-focused theatre was founded in 2003 and has since become one of Finland's largest theatres in terms of attenders. The huge increase in the popularity of stand-up comedy in recent years is also reflected in Linnateatteri's programme. The theatre's probably most famous actor and director is Valtteri Roiha, who is especially known for the Luolamies trilogy that has gained great popularity in Finland. The 320-seat Domino-sali in the heart of Turku provides an easy way to combine theatre with a dining experience, as the stage is in the same space as the restaurant hall. As a result, the atmosphere is club-like and relaxed. The space is also reasonably limited to tables of small and larger groups, for everyone to find a cozy spot to enjoy some high-class theatre. Onnibus.com is the best choice for every theatre lover to travel to their next art experience. Choose from one of our picks or your own favorite in smaller theatres and book your tickets!
