P*ska kaupunni and other Oulu specialities
On the way from the bus station to the Market square there is a local unofficial cultattraction, a graffiti known by every person in Oulu, Paska Kaupunni – directly translated into Finnish as ”a shitty city” in the Oulu dialect. The graffiti has been inspired by the Paska Kaupunki song by Kauko Röyhkä, which he dedicated to this hometown of Oulu in 1986. Soon after this the graffiti was made for the first time and even if the city of Oulu persistently removes it, it keeps on appearing time after time at the same spot. Paska Kaupunni is a local legend.
Känkky i.e. (cheap) pizza has reached a status close to that of a traditional cuisine in Oulu and the number of pizzerias in Oulu is perhaps the highest compared to the number of people in the city within all of Finland. The enthusiasm for pizza has led to a local specialty, a pizza with mayonnaise on it. Depending on the eater’s taste buds, mayonnaise pizza can be a delicacy or not that good, but in either case it is definitely worth trying.
Take a trip to lovely Oulu
Buy a Känkky or pack some other lunch and you can have a picnic at the Ainola park. The park is located in an island and with its rivers and smaller bodies of water and white bridges it is a very beautiful place <3 Close to the city center there are a few other islands with beautiful views and also cute wooden houses painted with several different colors. The islands are quite small so a trip to visit them will not take too long. Out of these islands, Pikisaari is the closest to the city center of Oulu and to the market square locally know as Torinranta. Torinranta is one of the most beautiful spots in Oulu with its old restored warehouses. During the day the square is a lively shopping placeand by night the terraces at the market are filled with happy city dwellers. The life at the Toriranta market is closely monitored by a chubby bronze statue of a police officer, which is probably the best known landmark in Oulu. The statue, called Toripoliisi, is an experienced companion in selfies.
Torinranta is located only a kilometer from the bus station and your Onnibus.com journey. However, your journey home might get postponed due to Oulu and its infectious dialect tempting you to stay longer. Book your bus tickets to warm feel Oulu here.
